The Magic

Zach loved giving gifts.  In fact, even in death, Zach gave his corneal tissues to give two people sight and gave his heart valves & associated blood vessels to help one person with a defective or diseased heart.  This was an easy decision for the family as Zach had just had a conversation with his mom back in May about what it meant to be an organ donor.  Zach saw this note on his mom’s newly renewed driver's license and asked what it meant.  She explained and without hesitation, he said, “that’s so cool. I want to do that when I die!”  Zach possessed a heart so big that it inspired everyone around him to be better, and to care more deeply about others.

Zach loved stuffies and could hardly pass one up at the store.  He wanted to take them home and show them all the love.  The overwhelming generosity of those who attended his funeral gifted us with well over 350 stuffed animals- too many to count, actually, but there were nine, 55-gallon bags full!  We chose to donate these to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC).  RMHC is committed to serving families through essential services that remove barriers, strengthen families, and promote healing.  RMHC provides a “home-away-from-home” and gives families with a sick child what they need most – each other.  The stuffed animals donated in Zach’s honor will give comfort and support to hundreds of families during a very difficult and stressful time.  Zach knew a thing or two about being away from home for medical treatment and would be so pleased that his magic lives on to help sick children across Texas, cheering them on and giving them the comfort, strength and courage they need to continue their fight.
